John E. Horton Sr., who worked as an independent contractor for the Lowell Sun, passed away unexpectedly with his family by his side on June 29th, 2016 at the age of 54.

John E. Horton Sr. was predeceased by his son Jessie Horton. John is survived by his wife Denise Horton of 33 years; his sons Tim and his wife Cheri Horton of Melrose, MA and John Jr. and his wife Ayla Horton of Derry, NH; his mother Jessie Belanger of Lawrence, MA; his brothers Lorin and his wife Katie Horton of Concord, NH, Adrian and his wife Lisa Horton from Concord, NH, Richard Belanger of Methuen, MA and Walter and his wife Angie McCurdy Bow, NH; his sisters Amanda Lebel of Lawrence, MA and Ashley and her Husband Jack Khurana of North Andover, MA, and several nieces and nephews. John was the son of the late George Horton of Dalton, MA.

John was born in Pittsfield MA, on June 16th, 1962. His love of outdoors started in his early years going to a Boy’s Camp, and the love continued while living on Arlo Guthrie’s farm. He had several rewarding jobs that provided for his family. At an early age he discovered his love for cooking. His culinary career started at the Oak N Spruce as a dish washer, working his way up to becoming master chef. He also enjoyed his career at Malden Mills where he worked for over 16 years.

John met the love of his life Denise in 1981 and shortly married in September of 1983. They had two boys and moved to Methuen, MA in the year of 1992. Being a family man, John expressed his love for bikes, cars, outdoors and Mr. Fix it projects with his children, family and friends. John was the corner stone of the family giving love, support and great advice to anyone in need, telling it like it is.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, July 5th, 2016 from 4:00 to 7:00pm at the Charles F. Dewhirst Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Methuen, MA 01844. A service for John will be held following the calling hours at 7:00pm in the funeral home chapel.
