Theresa S. (Mendys) Witkos, 100, a lifetime resident of Lawrence, passed away peacefully at the Nevins Nursing and Rehab Center in Methuen on Sunday, July 24, 2022, with her loving family at her side.
Born on May 7, 1922, Theresa was the seventh and youngest child of the late Jan and Honorata Mendys. Born and raised in Lawrence, she attended Holy Trinity Grammar School and was a graduate of Lawrence High School. For decades, she worked at Raytheon as an assembler, but most of her time and all of her focus was centered on family.
Upon attending a Polish picnic in Lowell, she met her late husband, Walter, with whom she shared 53 years of marriage. Theresa was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great- grandmother who was strongly rooted in her Polish heritage. Because of her, Polish traditions have remained vibrant and celebrated, especially during Wigilia on Christmas Eve.
A devout Catholic, Theresa was a member of the former Holy Trinity Parish in Lawrence and was currently a member of St. Monica’s Parish in Methuen.
In her later years, Theresa was lovingly provided with at-home assistance from Eunice Baldinelli and by her adopted granddaughter, Tara Sponsel. She loved her caregivers and treated them as if they were an extension of the family,
Theresa was predeceased by all her siblings: Wladyslaw, Mary, Walter, Stella, Sadie, and Matilda; her husband of 53 years, Walter R. Witkos; a daughter, Patricia A. Wright and son-in-law, Henry W. Wright. She will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Rick Homewood; her grandchildren and their spouses: Hank and Molly Wright, Craig and Kelly Wright, and Theresa and Eric Blackman; as well as her four great- grandchildren: Jackson, Charlotte, Harper and Samuel; and nieces and nephew: Carol Large, Mary Durant, Laura Dickenson, and Richard Mendys.
Do widzenia, Babci. Kochamy cie.
