Richard Scanlon Obituary

Richard O. Scanlon, 90, of Tamworth, New Hampshire, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 18, 2023, at the New Hampshire Veterans Home in Tilton, NH. 

           The son of the late Francis and Yvonne (Frechette) Scanlon, Richard was born in Lawrence on June 24, 1933,  He was educated in schools in Lawrence.  He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War.  He was employed for Hoffman Plumbing in Lawrence, and served as a Firefighter for the Lawrence Fire Department for 28 years, along with his son, Kirk, and retired in 1987.  He spent his retirement remodeling and building his camp in Tamworth with his son, Richard Jr., and lots of help from his close family, while caring for his wife, Sandra, who was disabled.  He was always a dedicated, hard worker and enjoyed many other jobs.  Most of his life, he resided in Lawrence, including the Lawrence Stadium Projects.  He enjoyed Tamworth, NH at Chocorua Lake swimming, sailing and snowmobiling with his wife, Sandra.  He fought many large fires in Lawrence including the old Lawrence Jail, Oxford Mill and many more.  Richard was a member of the Lawrence Firefighter Mutual Relief Association, Local 146, Lawrence Firefighters Union, and Relief In.

Richard was the husband of the late Sandra L (Mills) Scanlon, who passed away in 1991, and is survived by his children, Kirk Scanlon and his wife Patty of Methuen, Miriam Matthews and her husband Charles of Derry, NH, Richard Scanlon, Jr. and his wife Dina Paris of Tamworth, NH; his sisters, Lucille Borque of Haverhill, and Kathleen Knightly of Lawrence; 11 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Richard was predeceased by his son, Jeffrey Bodah and his siblings, Claire Bird, Frances Powers, Philip Scanlon, Rita Belair and Raymond Scanlon.

Relatives and friends are cordially invited to calling hours on Friday, December 22, 2023, from 10:00a.m. to 11:15 a.m. at the Dewhirst and Boles Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Methuen, MA 01844.  A Funeral Mass will follow on Friday, December 22, 2023, at 12 Noon in  St. Theresa’s Church-Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish, Plymouth St., Methuen, MA.  Burial with military honors will follow in Elmwood Cemetery, Methuen, MA.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Richard’s Memory to New Hampshire Veterans Home, 139 Winter St., Tilton, NH 03276.
