Rev. George Berthold Obituary

March 1, 1935 George Berthold was born in Lawrence, MA as the last son of Joseph Berthold and Laura Fluet.  He began his elementary schooling at St. Joseph’s School of the former St. Ann’s Parish.   He continued it under the Marist Brothers for grades 6 to 8 and graduated in 1949.  For high school years, he was a student at Augustinian Academy, Staten Island, NY graduating in 1953.

George studied at Villanova University for 3 years before entering St. John’s Seminary in Brighton, MA in 1957.  Seminary studies led to a degree in theology as well as ordination to the priesthood by Richard Cardinal Cushing in 1963.

After services in several churches, he began studies at the Institut Catholique de Paris in theology, defending a doctoral thesis there in 1975.  Back in the US, he began a teaching career at several area colleges, including nineteen years at St. Anselm College in Manchester, NH.

In 1985, he published a volume of some treatises of Maximus the confessor which he translated from the Greek.  The recent handbook of Maximus the Confessor (Oxford University Press, 2015) contains a chapter from his pen.  For some years, he was a member of the US dialogue between the Orthodox and Catholic Churches.

Fr Berthold’s family members include his brothers, Raymond Berthold and Arthur Berthold as well as many nieces, nephews, friends and colleagues. He was predeceased by his brothers and sisters, Henry Berthold, Irene Laird, Edward Berthold, Leo Berthold and Helen Peters.
