It is with great sadness, that we announce the passing of Luisa Lopez Diaz, a remarkable woman whose love for her family and friends, her passion for cooking and her unwavering commitment to the church community touched the lives of many. Luisa passed away peacefully at Massachusetts General Hospital at the age of 79.
Luisa was born in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico and is the 15th of 17 siblings of Francisco Lopez and Gregoria Diaz. She moved to Lawrence, MA, in 1971. Her greatest treasures are her children, Luis Antonio Martinez, Carlos Alberto Martinez, Ana Luisa Campos, Jose Francisco Fonseca, her six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and three children by marriage, Frank Campos, Ivet Martinez and Jennifer Vega.
Luisa was better known as ‘Sister Sazon’, for her extraordinary specialty in culinary arts; known for her fried , foods, rice and roasted pork, cakes and sweets. In fact, everything that came out of her kitchen was good. She also stood out for her skills in sewing, floristry, carpentry, crafts, singing, poetry and the art of laughter. God blessed her with many talents.
Luisa surrendered her heart to the Lord Jesus Christ in 1976, a moment that changed the course of her life and the lives of her children forever. She quickly enrolled in Bible Institute and graduated with high honors in 1979. She served in many areas within the congregational body; she was a Sunday school teacher and superintendent, a leader in women's ministries, a deacon, a bus driver, a kitchen minister, and a fundraiser. She ran all the bases, and her work was always performed with excellence.
The greatest legacy and inspiration that Luisa has left for her family, brethren in the faith and all who knew her, is her spirit of perseverance and determination to keep her gaze fixed on Christ. In short, her motto was this, in the words of singer-songwriter Rene Gonzalez, “Don’t give up.”
Luisa is already deeply missed by her children, extensive family and friends.
Calling hours for Luisa Lopez will be held, Monday, September 9, 2024 from 4PM-8PM; Funeral Service will take place Tuesday, September 10, 2024 at 11:00AM at the Dewhirst Boles Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Methuen, MA. Burial will follow in the Bellevue Cemetery.
