Joseph “Joe” Kowal, 88, a longtime resident of Methuen, passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 12, 2026., at Methuen Village.
Born on August 1, 1937, in Lawrence, Massachusetts, Joe was raised in Lawrence, where he built the foundation of life marked by loyalty, hard work, and a deep love of family. In 1963, he began a dedicated career with AVCO/Textron. That same year, he and his beloved wife Ann moved to Methuen, which remained his home for the rest of his life. He continued his work at AVCO/Textron as a valued employee until his retirement in 1993.
Joe and Ann shared a remarkable 66 years of marriage. Together they shared a passion for travel, embarking on over 200 trips throughout their years together. Whether they were visiting the familiar beauty of North Conway, exploring the wide-open spaces of Montana, walking through Ireland, or cruising the Mediterranean coast, Joe was happiest with Ann by his side.
Joe was known for his great smile and genuine kindness, his attention to detail, particularly when assembling grandchildren’s toys, or his famous “crazy bets” when playing the card game 45’s.
Joe’s greatest legacy is his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Ann, his children and their spouses, Michael and Kim Kowal, Daniel and Margaret Kowal, and Kathleen and Daniel McCarthy. He was the proud grandfather of Ryan, Kyle, Casey and Kelsey and the adoring great-grandfather to Abigail, Declan and Eloise.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his kindness and the memory of his smile will remain with us forever.
A celebration of his life will be held privately by the family. Arrangements are by the Dewhirst Boles Funeral Home 80 Broadway, Methuen. To leave an online condolence, please visit Joe’s tribute page at www.dewhirstbolesfuneral.com.
