John J McDermott

It is with great sadness in our hearts and souls that we announce the passing of John Joseph McDermott, the beloved husband of Sandra (Skop) McDermott, with whom he celebrated 65 years of marriage. He passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family.

John was born in Lawrence on October 1, 1936 to the late James and Clare (Sifferlen) McDermott. He was a life long resident of Methuen and attended Methuen Schools, graduating from Tenney High School in 1955. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Wentworth Institute, Lowell Tech and Northeastern University. He was employed with Avco, Data General, Honeywell and GenRad before becoming self-employed as a Mechanical Design and Project Engineer.

He also served in the U.S. Air Force Reserves as an instrument repairman. He was activated in October 1962 for the Cuban Missile Crisis. In addition, his love for the ocean, fishing and boating led him to become a Coast Guard Auxiliarist, where he served as an instructor and vessel examiner. He was a communicant in St. Lucy's Parish and a Parish Council member. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Holy Name Society. His hobbies included model railroading, traveling to the ocean and basketball refereeing.

In addition to his wife Sandra, he is survived by his sons, Brian McDermott, Thomas and his wife Elizabeth McDermott and daughter Kathleen McDermott. He was the cherished grandfather to James, Sean, Brianna, Declan, Tristan and Taylor. Recently, he was excited to welcome two great-granddaughters, Ruby May and Lola James. He leaves a brother Robert and his wife Maribeth McDermott of Sarasota, FL. He also has several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was pre-deceased by his parents Clare and James McDermott, brother James and sister-in-law Thelma McDermott, and daughter-in-law Kimberly McDermott.

Relatives and friends may call on Monday, September 23, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Dewhirst and Boles Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Methuen, MA 01844.   A Funeral Mass will be held Monday, September 23, 2024, at 12 Noon in St. Lucy’s Church, Merrimack St., Methuen.  Burial will follow with military honors in the Elmwood Cemetery, Methuen.
