Obituary

James Augustus McInnis – Danvers, MA

James Augustus McInnis, 93, passed away in his home Saturday, June 10, 2023. He was the husband of the late Lucille (Carbone) McInnis, with whom he shared 51 years of marriage.

He was born in Danvers on December 14, 1929, and, other than his military service, lived his entire life in the town he loved and called home. He grew up on High St. with his parents, the late Charles Augustus and Margaret (Dykes) McInnis, and his seven siblings, Annie, Ed, Mary, Cilla, Betty, Flo, and Bill. James attended Danvers Public School and received his associate's degree at NSCC in Fire Science. He worked hard and devoted his life to providing for his family. James served in the United States Army during the Korean War. After the war, he had several different jobs, including working for T. Mackey & Sons, Danvers YMCA, First Student and St. Mary’s Cemetery. Most notably James served over 40 years in the Danvers Fire Department. He was hired as a call man on February 15, 1954 and then went on to be a permanent firefighter on May 1, 1955. On January 19, 1969, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and in 1992 he became the acting captain of Group 2. He was also a charter member of Local 2038. In 1957, he became a member of the Danvers Diving Team. After retiring, he a drove a school bus for Beverly and Peabody and never missed the chance to drive their sports teams to games. James enjoyed reading, boating, fishing and camping. He was a true Danvers historian. He enjoyed gardening and growing vegetables. He especially enjoyed his visits from his nieces and nephews and his fellow firefighters.

He enjoyed playing friendly games of cards with his family members. The highlight of his life was spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He never tired of watching them playing in the yard or swimming in the pool. They were truly his pride and joy.

He is survived by his 9 children, Linda Cullen (Chris James), Gus, Mike, John, Paul, Rob and Diane McInnis, Mary Beth (Gary) Puska and Matt (Colleen) McInnis; and 17 grandchildren, Tim (Emily) Cullen, Jamie (Nicole) Cullen, Catie (Ryan) Plourde, Bethany Cullen; Taryn (Dave) Murphy, Jayna (Tom) Radzim, Chad McInnis; Meghan (Justin) Shairs, Jillian (Chris) Hall, Johnny (Brittany) McInnis; Kristiana McInnis, Sean (Ashley) McInnis; Tyler and Susie Puska; Paisley, Emmeline and Devon McInnis; and 22 great-grandchildren, Samantha and Benjamin Cullen; Luca and Gemma Cullen; Leland McInnis; Hudson and Deila Plourde; Jordyn and Dominic Stritzke; Reid, Drew and Alexa Brotherton; Owen Murphy; Scarlett, Gavin and Hayden Radzim; Quinn, Jack and Jimmy Shairs; Charli McInnis; Logan Hall; Mauve McInnis.
