Hazel (Powell) Rutherford – Methuen, MA

Hazel (Powell) Rutherford 94, died peacefully at home. Hazel was born in Methuen MA and was a resident of Methuen MA for her entire life. She was a graduate of Edward F. Searles High School.

She was the daughter of Leslie and Herbert Powell of Methuen.

In her early years Hazel worked as a secretary at Merrimack Paper of Lawrence and in her later years was a day care provider in her home. She was also a devoted Girl Scout leader for 30 years in the Town of Methuen and was a Sunday School teacher for many years and a member of United Riverside Congregational Church. The family owned Hodgson Service Station/Tower Hill Towing of Lawrence.

Hazel loved so many things and was so full of life all the time. Some of the things she most enjoyed were going to Harvey Station, New Brunswick, Canada to visit her relatives with her sister Grace, crossword puzzles, scrabble, taking trips with her Girl Scout Troop with her granddaughter Jennifer Patti and crocheting. She looked forward to her yearly trips over Thanksgiving weekend with her sisters, daughter and nieces to North Conway and Freeport, ME. She also made beautiful quilts, crafting her own greeting cards and most importantly, going to church every Sunday.  

She was famous for making scones to bring with her to church.

She is predeceased by her loving husband of 60 years, Donald Rutherford. She is survived by sisters Eleanor O’Hearn of Methuen, and Evelyn Libbey of Rockford, IL. Brother Hartley Powell and his wife Angie of Windham, NH. She was predeceased by sister Grace Nault and husband Norman of Windham, NH and brother William Powell and wife Marge of Salem, NH. Hazel is also survived by daughter Sandra Patti and husband James of Salem, NH, son Donald Rutherford and wife Karen of Methuen, son Steven Rutherford of Derry, NH and daughter-in-law Tammi Stanwood of Florida. Grandchildren James Patti, Jennifer Patti and partner Ron Doyon, Stacy Rutherford and partner Paul Griffin, Gregory Rutherford, Brittani Rutherford and partner David Labbe and Cody Rutherford and partner Rachel Charlebois. Great-grandchildren Tristan Doyon, Jaydon Doyon, Logan Griffin, and Lyla Rutherford. Hazel is also survived by her friend Carol Stanwood of Methuen, MA, several nieces and nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews, good friend and Spiritual Adviser at United Riverside, Brian Durkin, her church family, and relatives Janet, Stuart and Susan from Harvey Station, New Brunswick, Canada.  

A memorial service will be held at her beloved United Riverside Congregational Church, 290 Water Street, Lawrence, MA on Saturday, June 18, 2022 at 2:00 p.m.
