Douglas “Doug” Nelson – Methuen, MA

Douglas “Doug” Nelson, 78, of Methuen, passed away peacefully on April 10, 2023, surrounded by his adoring family. He was born in Lawrence, MA to Clifford and Grace (Raimey) Nelson on April 3, 1945.  He grew up in Methuen with his two brothers, working on their family farm. He recalled his childhood fondly and shared many rich and wonderful stories of this time throughout his life.  He attended Haverhill Trade School which launched his lifelong career as an automobile mechanic.

Douglas is survived and missed by his loving and devoted wife of 50 years, Teresa (Murphy). His daughter Kelley and her husband Donald Granahan. His son Douglas and his wife Erin Nelson. His son Michael and his partner Jenny Sousa. His brother Alan and his partner Brenda Kelley. Doug’s memory lives on with his cherished grandchildren Davin and Aidan Granahan, Connor and Grace Nelson, Ben Nelson, Kira Ouellette, and Emme Nelson. Douglas was predeceased by his parents and brother Wendell Nelson. 

Doug found enjoyment in a number of activities including automobile racing, oil painting, collecting coins, making models, and working outside in his flower garden.

Some of his greatest joy came from the time he spent with his cherished wife and three children. They created many memories while enjoying annual trips to Disney World and other trips as a family.

He took an active role in the lives of his grandchildren, creating deep connections with each and instilling in them the values of respect, hard work, perseverance, kindness, compassion, and sensitivity.

He was well liked by everyone he met, mostly due to gentle nature and his witty humor.

He stood as a pillar of strength for his family and the focal point of honesty and humbleness. He will be missed dearly.

Family and friends are invited to calling hours on Wednesday, April 12, 2023 from 5 pm to 7 pm at the Dewhirst Boles Funeral Home 80 Broadway, Methuen. A service will follow the calling hours at the funeral home at 7:00 PM.  Burial will take place at a later date, at the convenience of the family.
