Mr. Donald "Don" Roy Chalmers – Methuen, MA
Mr. Donald "Don" Roy Chalmers, 87, passed away peacefully on February 12, 2025, in Methuen, Massachusetts.
Born on August 28, 1937, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Don pursued higher education by earning an associate's degree from community college before furthering his studies at Harvard to gain additional training in engineering. His passion for innovation led him to a distinguished career at Polaroid, where he became a project engineer. Among his many contributions, he played a role in the development of the "Polapulse" battery used in the folding SX-70 instant camera—an achievement that reflected his dedication and ingenuity.
Don proudly served his country as a radio operator for a search and rescue seaplane in the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1958. His time in service instilled in him a deep sense of discipline and commitment that carried through every aspect of his life.
Beyond his professional and military accomplishments, Don was a man who embraced life with enthusiasm and warmth. He found joy in the outdoors, whether fishing, golfing, skiing, or taking rides out on his boat. He also had a love for sports, playing tennis and hockey while cheering passionately for his beloved New England Patriots. Some of his most cherished moments were spent at Newfound Lake, where he shared laughter and memories with family and friends—his laughter always the loudest in the room.
Don was a devoted husband to Eleanor and a loving father to their five children: Russell, Peter, Billy, Jeff, and Rob. He welcomed into the family his daughters-in-law Gina, Kristin, Margaret, and Laurie with open arms. His legacy continues through his grandchildren Abby, Chelsea, Skye, Gianna, Joey, Robert, Jacoby, Brady, and Daniel; as well as his great-grandchildren Logan and Lucas. He now joins his parents Pauline Snow-Chalmers and George Chalmers in eternal rest.
A memorial gathering will be held on February 15, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Dewhirst Boles Funeral Home, located at 80 Broadway in Methuen, Massachusetts 01844.
Don will be remembered as a kind and gentle husband and father who deeply cherished the children in his life. His love for family and friends was evident in every moment he shared with them. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
