Charlotte Lawrence Obituary

Charlotte “Chuckie” Poyner (McIlwain) Lawrence, age 96 passed away on Tuesday, February 8, 2022 at the Wingate Nursing Home in Haverhill Ma.

Chuckie was born March 12, 1925 in Methuen Massachusetts to Albert Clinton & Helen Gertrude (Mitchell) McIlwain.  The second eldest of eight children, she graduated Edward Searles High School (now Methuen High School) in 1943 and from Andover Junior College in 1979.  During her youth, she could be found playing violin in the high school orchestra, assembling electric tubes or just dancing!  You could always count on Chuckie to start any dance number and was often the first to encourage others to join in on the dance!

Chuckie was a rental manager for Andover Commons until her retirement in 1995, receiving her accreditation from the National Institute of Real Estate Management in 1984. She was also an active member of New England Black Property Managers Forum, Greater Lawrence Community Housing Board and the Merrimack Valley Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

She married her love Joseph William Lawrence in 1946, where they had three children: Joseph William Jr, Charlotte Jean, & Kelly G.  Joe and Chuckie spent 35 years of marriage until his passing in 1981.  She is also predeceased by her two children Charlotte Jean in 1955 and Kelly G in 1975 as well as her three sisters, Helen Alberta, Olive “Sherry” Pauline, Anna Maria and her three brothers Albert “Buddy” Clinton, Thomas Mitchell and Joy Dana.  She is survived by her sister Gloria Edith and her son Joseph “Billy” Lawrence with his wife Damaris; her granddaughter Keode (Lawrence) Field with her husband Matthew; her grandson Khalid Lawrence with his wife Elise, and her two great grandchildren, Dyson and Jayla Field.

Throughout her life, Chuckie enjoyed traveling where she and Joe took to all parts of the world, including Tahiti, St Croix, New York, San Francisco, Hawaii, Fiji and beyond!  She enjoyed many cruises, relaxing in the Caribbean islands and eating.  In her later years, she lived in San Francisco with her sister Sherry until moving back to New Hampshire.  There she stayed to enjoy spending time playing games or baking her famous apple pie with her son, grandchildren and great grandchildren!  Her infectious laugh and ability to beat anyone in a scrabble game will be missed.
