Richard Doherty Obituary

Richard Leo “Dick” Doherty, 75, of Methuen, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 13th at Holy Family Hospital surrounded by his loving family after a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of Bonnie Ellen (Mulligan) Doherty. They recently celebrated 50 years of marriage this past November. Dick was born to Rita (Bergeron) and Frank Doherty in Lawrence, MA on October 16, 1943.

Dick graduated from Tenney High School in Methuen in 1962 at which time he entered into the U.S. Air Force to proudly serve his country. Dick owned and operated his own plumbing business. His plumbing career led him to his next venture working for Raytheon, in which he was stationed in Saudi Arabia and the Marshall Islands. He was currently working part-time as a gas inspector for Lawrence and North Andover, MA. He also previously worked as a plumbing inspector in surrounding towns.

Dick was an avid golfer and he could often be found at Merrimack Valley Golf Club either on the course or playing cards with his extended golf family. It was at Merrimack that Dick introduced the game of golf to his children. Dick was an active member of Saint Monica’s Parish and was a key figure in many of the parish construction and renovation projects throughout the years.

Above all, Dick was a devoted family man. He enjoyed cooking for his family while hosting many family gatherings. He traveled around New England following his children and grandchildren over the years in their many sports and other activities.

Dick will be deeply missed by his wife Bonnie and their four children: Paul and his wife Renee of Methuen, MA; Peter and his wife Leah of Hampstead, NH; James and his wife Amy of Atkinson, NH; and Elizabeth and her husband Adam Bruce of Methuen, MA. He  also leaves his loving grandchildren Calvin, Zachary, Ethan, Liam, Owen, Evan, Keegan, Sophie, Maisie, Carson, Maxwell and one great grandson Chase; also sisters Marlene O’Connor and Barbara Pearson, and her companion Donald Gagnon; his brother Ken Doherty and his wife Paula and several nieces and nephews. He was recently predeceased by his brother-in-law Tom O’Connor.
