Helen Szmyt Obituary

Helen (Nawrot) Szmyt, age 97, died peacefully on Friday, November 29, 2019 at the High Point Hospice House, Haverhill, MA after a brief stay. Helen was born to the late Alexandra (Krowiak) and Vincent Nawrot Jr. on May 3, 1922 in Tuczempy, Poland where she was educated as a Master Furrier.  She immigrated to the US and settled in Lawrence with her husband and son in 1961. She was predeceased by her husband Stanley J. Szmyt, and her five siblings. She excelled as a designer, seamstress and furrier at Freedman Furs and ultimately became the owner until her retirement.  She loved designing all kinds of fur garments and catering to her loyal clientele.  Her sister Stefania and nieces are grateful to her for making it possible for them to come to live in the US and pursue a better life and prosperous future for them and their families. She was loved by everyone who knew her and was well-respected in the community.

She is survived by her only son Henry J. Szmyt and his wife Davena of Port St. Lucie Florida, Grandsons are Steven T. Szmyt and wife Stacey of Portsmouth NH, Christopher H. Szmyt and his wife Emily of Auburn, NH, and Paul S. LeBrun, Newfields, NH.   Her four Great Grandchildren are Sydney and Samantha Szmyt, Connor Szmyt and Brianna LeBrun. Nieces include Halina McCormack and her daughters Janina and Aleksandra from Staten Island, NY, Bozena Rodenhiser, husband Richard and son Andrew from Merrimack, N H., Elizabeth Baronowski, husband Jerzy and sons Michael and Thomas, residing in Huntington, NY, and Grazyna Baer of Framingham, MA. She also has family in Poland. Judy Sullivan was a loyal friend and dedicated caregiver for the past six years.

Family and friends are invited to visiting hours on Sunday, December 8, from 2 pm to 5 pm at the Dewhirst & Boles Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Methuen, with a Mass at St. Monica’s Church, 212 Lawrence St., Methuen, on TUESDAY, December 10th at 11:00 AM, followed by burial in Bellevue Cemetery.
