Frank H. Zacharias, 94, of Methuen, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 22, 2019 at High Pointe Hospice in Haverhill with his family by his side.
The son of the late Edmund and Frances L. (Gunther) Zacharias. Frank was born in Methuen on May 26, 1925. He was educated in Methuen schools and was a graduate of Searles High School in Methuen. In 1943, he began his railroad career, being hired by the New York Central Railroad as a locomotive fireman in the Youngstown-Cleveland, Ohio area. In 1947, he was promoted to a locomotive engineer, being employed by the New York Central and later Conrail, retiring in 1986. He resided in the Youngstown and Cleveland area until moving back to Methuen after his retirement. He was a member of the United Transportation Union (UTU) and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Engineers (BLF&E). He also enjoyed stamp collecting and fishing.
Frank is survived by his wife, Mary A. (Margerison) Zacharias, who passed away on December 24, 2019, and was predeceased by his first wife, Sara Ann (Tapley) Zacharias. He is also survived by two sons, Samuel E. “Skip” Zacharias of Middlebury Heights, OH, and Donald R. and his wife Sally Zacharias of Polk, OH, 5 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Frank was predeceased by two sons, Frank Thomas Zacharias and James Robert Zacharias, and two brothers and their wives, Edmund H. and Alice Zacharias, and Richard P. and Agnes Zacharias.
Relatives and friends are cordially invited to calling hours on Friday, December 27th, 2019, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Dewhirst & Boles Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Methuen, MA, 01844. A funeral service will take place at 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel.
