Welcome to the memorial page for

Zenobia Sluz

November 8, 1922 ~ May 30, 2017 (age 94) 94 Years Old

Zenobia (Zinaida Chierech) Sluz. Zenya was born in Neswesz, Poland (now Belarus) on November 8 in 1922. She lived on the family farm and was a school teacher and married the late Leon Sluz in November of 1944. Zenya and Leon and Zenya’s sister Halina (Andrzejewski) were taken by the Nazis to a slave labor camp in Germany where they were forced labor in a dynamite factory. The factory was constantly being bombed by allied planes and she remembered how they often had to flee the factory and hide in bomb craters. She always hated listening to news stories about bombs falling on villages whether they were in Vietnam, Iraq or Afghanistan. After being liberated by the Americans, the Sluzes lived in a Displaced Persons camp until they could secure transport to the United States. Zenya worked on the Davidowicz Farm in Bradford, Massachusetts before moving to Haverhill. She worked in shoe factories and later at Western Electric and Lucent Technologies in North Andover. Family was always important with Zenya having raised four children: Andrew, George, (the late) Anna Agnes Carroll and Alex in Haverhill Massachusetts. The family lived next door to her sister Halina’s family, (the late) George Andrzejewski, Walter Andrews, Helen Page and Liza Parrish. After many years in Haverhill, Zenya and Leon moved to Andover where they lived at Jenkins Road. After Leon died, Zenya moved to Andover Commons and then to Academy Manor in Andover until her demise. She leaves six grandchildren: Erik and Christopher Sluz, Alyssa (Sluz) Beck and Jason, Jesse and Duncan Carroll. She also has eight great-grandchildren.

Family and friends are invited to visit on Thursday June 1, 2017 from 9:30 am to 10:30 am at The Charles F. Dewhirst Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Methuen. A Funeral Mass will be at 11:30 am on Thursday in St. Augustine Church, Andover. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Andover.
