Mary C. (Golden) Young, 91, a long time resident and proud citizen of Lawrence, passed away on April 4, 2017.  She died peacefully at home, cared for by her nephew, William Cote, Amita Kiley and family, and other relatives who will miss her dearly.

The daughter of the late William H. and Mary E. (Preston) Golden of Andover, Mary was born in Lawrence on October 29, 1925.  She was a graduate of St. Augustine's School in Andover and St. Mary's High School in Lawrence.  Interested in printing, she apprenticed at the Golden Press in Lawrence, owned by Robert Young, a widower with two young sons.  Mary gained more than a career; she gained a new family, whose descendants love their "Gram".  Following her husband's death, she closed the business and worked at Standard Coat and Apron.  This was at a time many Latinos were moving to Lawrence, some of them finding work at this place, where she made them feel welcome.  She later worked in housekeeping at Lawrence General Hospital.  Many patients' and workers' days were brightened by a kind word from Mary.

From her earliest days, Mary was a woman of faith and love which were manifested in many ways.  She belonged to many civic, professional and spiritual organizations, where she made many friends and contributed to the community.  She belonged to the Credit Women International organization, where she stayed on as an adviser even after closing her business.  She was a devout and faithful member of the former St. Laurence O'Toole Parish of Lawrence, the former Holy Trinity Parish of Lawrence, and currently attended St. Anthony Maronite Church. She was a member of the Third Order of St. Francis and the Lazarus Group while at Holy Trinity, and the Daughters of St. Anthony at St. Anthony's.  She enjoyed and volunteered at the Mahrajan every year.  Her connection with St. Laurence's was also a connection to the city of Lawrence.  She belonged to the Friends of St. Laurence, a group that was determined to make the old abandoned church site into something for the community.  They partnered with Lawrence Community Works to transform the site into the "Our House" community center.  Mary continued to participate in many LCW activities.  She also was Volunteer of the Year at Mary Immaculate Nursing Home, where she had volunteered for nearly two decades and served as a Eucharistic Minister.  And yet, she still found time to travel the world.

Mary was a Lawrence resident most of her life.  She loved Lawrence and never lost hope in the city, speaking up whenever people would denigrate it.  She taught us to do the same.  Her life was a shining example of love and service, from being kind and helpful at home all the way to helping others through community groups, work and church.  This light will continue to shine through the many peoples' lives she touched.

Mary was predeceased by her brothers, William and Francis Golden and sisters, Elizabeth Cooney, Marguerite Ringland,  Beatrice Cote, and Florence Jacques.  She was also predeceased by her husband, Robert Young and son, Everett Young.  Mary is survived by a brother, Joseph Golden and a sister, Patricia Dwyer and her husband Edward.  She also survived by a son, Robert Young and his wife, Marguerite.  Mary also leaves four generations of descendants.
