Welcome to the memorial page for

Marjorie Caton

December 3, 2016

Marjorie E. Caton, 97, of Newburyport and formerly of Hebron, Connecticut passed away on Saturday December 3, 2016 at Country Manor Nursing Center in Newburyport, Massachusetts.  Marjorie was born and raised in Salem, New Hampshire and was a graduate of Woodbury High School.  For many years, Marge was the organist at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Hebron and also served as the choir director for several years. She also taught music as part of the Sunday school, and directed a junior choir as well. She also played for many church functions including weddings, funerals, christenings and parties.

She also accompanied the ministers to local area nursing homes and played hymns for services held weekly, and also played the "oldies" for sing-a-longs at many places. She never had any formal piano lessons but could play almost anything "by ear" so she was always ready to meet requests as she played. She also played the piano at many activities at the Stonecroft Senior Center in Hebron and also at St. Joseph Living Center in Windham, CT.

She volunteered at the Hebron Library. She was an avid reader and loved to share her knowledge and reminisce about "the good old days".

Her outgoing personality allowed her to visit with many, console many, and share her strong faith with anyone who would listen!

Marge greatly enjoyed visiting with several classes at both Hebron Elementary School and Gilead Hill School over the years. From 1994 to 1996, she volunteered weekly to play and work with the students in Eileen Baukus' Transition classes, which was a highlight for both Marge and the children.

Marjorie, was well loved and well known by young and old in Hebron and she was affectionately called "Grandma Marge" .

Marjorie was predeceased by her infant son William Caton and her son Thomas Caton.  She leaves her sisters Gladys Chorley of Salem and Ethyl Ackroyd of Andover as well as many nieces and nephews.  Marjorie was predeceased by her sisters Lillian Magoon, Helen Ebert, Mildred Tyler, Eleanor Lenzen, Edna Watts, Ruth Haligowski and Edith Fancy and her mother Annie Copeland and father Robert Copeland.

Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service for Marjorie on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at 11:00 AM at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Hebron, CT. To leave an online condolence, please go to www.dewhirstfuneral.com.
