It is with deep sadness that the family of Eugene P. Cusack, 78, of Methuen announces his passing on Sunday morning at the Holy Family Rehabilitation Center after a short illness.

Born on February 27, 1937 in New York City as the son of Thomas and Catherine (Casey) Cusack, Gene moved with his family to Lawrence in his youth and settled in Methuen for the last 39 years of his life. When his father died early in his life, Gene took on the fatherly role for his younger family members.

Known affectionately throughout the family as Grampy, Gene graduated with the CCHS Class in 1954. A retiree from the telephone company as a lineman, he and his best friend and wife of 56 years Margarita attended many of their grandchildren’s sporting events and programs. He loved their winter trips to Florida and their summers in Maine, as the beach was always calling to him; a place he could walk for hours on end.

With a single call, Gene would respond to anyone who needed help without question. To know Gene was all it took to be part of his extended family.

Gene is survived by his wife Margarita of Methuen, their children Gene Cusack and his wife Cheryl of Newburyport, Patricia Cyr and her husband Chris of Methuen, and his brother Thomas Cusack of Lawrence. He also leaves his grandchildren Collin, David, and Tyler of Newburyport, Evan of Methuen, many nieces, nephews and in-laws, and his many friends, all of whom he called family. He was preceded in death by his sister Peggy and brothers Jimmy and Bryan, all of Methuen.

Calling hours will be on Thursday, January 21, 2016 from 4 PM to 7 PM at the Charles F. Dewhirst Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Methuen. A Funeral Mass will be on Friday, January 22, at 11 AM in St. Lucy’s Parish, Methuen. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ALS Family Charitable Foundation, 1 Trowbridge Road, Bourne, MA 02360.
