Edward Wolfendon, 88, of Methuen, died peacefully on February 21, 2015 at Nevins Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a brief illness. Born on May 16, 1926, he was the son of the late Harry and Laura Walker Wolfendon. Ed was the surviving brother of the late William Wolfendon, Ruth Hammond, Robert Wolfendon, and Marjorie O’Connell-Murphy.

Ed resided for his whole life in Methuen. He graduated from New Searles High School, served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific during World War II, and worked for Bolta General Tire and Rubber Company as well as the Town of Methuen before retiring. Ed was a long-time active Mason. With his generous heart and spirit, he was a supporter of many worthy causes and charities in the area, including those sponsored by the local Shriners Masonic organization. Ed enjoyed a good game of golf, even boasting of playing in the snow using black balls. He also loved his camp on Province Lake in New Hampshire, where he could enjoy golfing, swimming and socializing with family and good friends. As Ed aged he spent many afternoons and evenings dining at his favorite restaurant, The Fireside, socializing with long time Methuen friends; Sunday nights with Barbara Burn’s Family and Evelyn Benson were special.

Ed who was often viewed as a father figure for Marjorie’s children is survived by Sheila Demai and husband Nick of St. Pete Beach, FL, and Kitty Hawk, NC, Kathleen Suchon and husband Walter of Dartmouth, MA, predeceased by Mark O’Connell, the late husband of Marsha, of Salem, NH, Ed Murphy and wife Melissa of Woodstock, VA, and Bob Murphy and wife Eryn of Methuen, MA. As a special note, the family would like to thank Eryn and Bob’s family for their thoughtful and loving support provided to Ed in his senior years.
Though never married, “Unc” as he was known in the family is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins as well as his Oakland Avenue “family”, his neighbors on “The Hill”. Never having children of his own, Ed walked three “daughters” down the aisle – Sheila, Kathleen and Catherine Burns Saba.

Ed was a man who enjoyed the company of others, and was generous to all around him. He could tell a great story, coining the phrase “nifty”. Ed or “Unc” as most referred will be sadly missed and remembered by many. He was truly one of a kind.

Family and friends are invited to visit at the Charles F. Dewhirst Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Methuen, MA on Friday, February 27th from 4 PM to 7 PM. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 28th at 10:30 AM at the funeral home.
